A Flag That Flew Over Trévières!

Some artifacts are far more than museum pieces—they carry history, memories, and the legacy of those who fought for freedom.

Today, we are incredibly proud to share a remarkable gift from Tessa Walsh, granddaughter of Pfc. Thomas N. Oglesby (1919–2018), WWII veteran of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment.

After we appealed for an original WWII United States flag, Tessa answered without hesitation. She generously donated not only this beautiful American flag, but also the 2nd Infantry Division flag that draped her grandfather’s coffin following his passing in June 2018.

During the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, we had the extraordinary honor of flying this original American flag over Trévières—the first French town liberated by soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division during World War II.

It was a truly unforgettable moment.

Over the course of the commemorations, the flag witnessed moving ceremonies honoring the liberation of Trévières, heartfelt visits from families of 2nd Infantry Division veterans, and even a special visit from Czech President Petr Pavel, who toured our military camp and exhibition in Normandy.

And more special moments followed.

In May 2025, the flag once again flew proudly above us during the Pilsen Liberation Festival and the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Czechoslovakia. And 332 days after our visit to Trévières, this moment symbolically connected the first and the last European cities liberated by soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division during the war.

In the years ahead, both flags will continue their journey. They will accompany commemorations of the 2nd Infantry Division’s historic battles across Europe, serving as lasting symbols of sacrifice, remembrance, and the enduring friendship we share with the families of the division’s WWII veterans.

For us, they will always represent the courage of Pfc. Thomas Oglesby, hero of the Battle for Hill 192, and the incredible generosity of his family.
