  • NOTES:
Cpl. Carl H. Klein (24 y.o.) was an aid man with the third platoon of Company G. When a squad was sent out to reestablish contact with the platoon which was surrounded, Cpl. Klein followed them. Although subjected to an intense mortar barrage which kept the men pinned down in a ditch, this enlisted man left the relative safety of his position and went forward to the aid of the wounded. When passing through a gate constantly covered by heavy enemy fire, Cpl. Klein was wounded. Despite this wound, he continued on until he reached the casualties and administered aid. Although under constant sniper fire, and wounded once again, this enlisted man, with complete disregard for personal safety continued his task until knocked unconscious by the concussion of a mortar shell burst, and lay there until evacuated under cover of darkness." - The citation accompanying the Silver Star award to Cpl. Carl H. Klein for his action on June 16, 1944, France.
